We need to eat a low-cholesterol diet for a healthy heart and the best way to ensure this happens is to employ healthy cooking techniques. For example, substitute sweet potatoes for regular potatoes, and switch to wheat pastas and whole grain breads to begin with. Fruits and vegetables are high in fiber and nutrition, so eat as much as possible at every meal.

Most people today know how to use the internet to find information and probably have a connection at home as well. It takes five minutes or less to look up a quick, easy to prepare, healthy recipe that you can put together in a jiffy for the family. The more innovative you get in the kitchen, the more your kids are going to enjoy rushing to the dining table for each meal.

You will find some excellent bread making machines available on the market. Alternatively, you can choose a rice cooker that doubles as bread maker – a kind of two for the price of one deal. You can bake your own bread using whole grains and nutrition packed flour. Doing your own baking is a great way to get the kids interested in cooking. There are lots of kid-friendly recipes online as well. Choose recipes that make use of plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Fish is an excellent source of quality protein, low in fat and high in omega 3 fatty acids. Fish also has plenty of vitamin D and B2, phosphorus, calcium, zinc, iodine, potassium, magnesium and iron. Fish is very good for keeping the heart and brain healthy. Try to cook fish at least twice a week – it is very easy to cook and does not need anything except some herbs and perhaps some garlic added to it. Healthy fish choices include salmon, herring, sardines, light tuna and mackerels.

Dairy products offer a wealth of health benefits including loads of calcium and protein. Just make sure you choose low fat every time you pick up your dairy products at the grocery store. Did you know that yoghurt makes a great substitute for a wide variety of desserts? It can be used to replace rich cream and other sweet products with high fat contents.

Garlic is loaded with health benefits, but sadly the name only conjures up thoughts of bad breath for most people! You don’t have to pop raw garlic pods or garlic pills, simply add garlic to your cooking for some truly healthy meals. Garlic is a great antioxidant; it helps to treat acne, heart problems, lowers cholesterol, prevent blood clots and much more. Wait until the last few minutes of cooking to add the garlic to the dish for the maximum benefit.
